Once, the sage Buddha Kaushik, also known as Valmiki, was meditating on the banks of the river Tamasa.

Seeing the plight of the bird, the compassionate sage was filled with sympathy and decided to confront the hunter.
As he approached the hunter, he realized that the hunter was unaffected by the pain and suffering he had caused.
Valmiki questions the hunter about his lack of remorse and the justification for his actions.
The hunter named Ratnakar disclosed that he was a tribal man and his profession was hunting.
He explained that he has a family to feed and has no other means of survival. Ratnakar was completely oblivious to the moral and ethical consequences of his actions.
Recognizing the hunter’s ignorance and his potential for transformation, Valmiki decided to impart spiritual knowledge to him.
He asked Ratnakar to introspect and examine his actions and their consequences. Valmiki then asked the hunter to sit in meditation and chant the name of Lord Rama, the embodiment of righteousness and divine grace.
Ratnakar followed Valmiki’s instructions and started chanting the name of Lord Rama with utmost devotion. Years passed by as he continued his practice.
Due to the intensity of Ratnakar’s devotion and meditation, a bambi formed around him, which completely covered his body.
Such was his unwavering dedication that an ant-hill shaped like a human body came to be known as Valmiki after the sage who guided Ratnakar’s transformation.
After years of intense penance and meditation, Ratnakar’s heart became pure, and he attained divine insight.
Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, appeared before him and blessed him with the knowledge and power to compose the Ramayana, the epic tale of Lord Rama.
